Shipbuilding steels
All-round resistance
Shipbuilding steel is a type of steel used by shipyards and shipbuilding companies to manufacture hulls for cargo and passenger ships, boats, offshore oil platforms, gangways and other floating structures. The main characteristics are: high strength, low temperature resilience, corrosion resistance and weldability.
Shipbuilding steel is tested and certified by the certifying bodies LR, GL, DNV, DNV-GL, BV, ABS, etc.
Sectors of application
- Manufacture of ship hulls and structures
- Oil, gas and offshore wind platforms
- Maritime structures
- Industrial plants and pressure equipment
Conditions of supply
Gross rolling mill
Products made from S235JR, S275JR and S355JR structural steels are generally rolled without changing rolling temperatures and heat treatment conditions. The material designation for a product rolled in this way is given the abbreviation +AR, or the specification is omitted altogether.
Standardisation lamination
The +N supply state can be achieved by annealing in a furnace (+N) or by rolling with subsequent forming in a given temperature range (+NR). This results in a material state equivalent to that achieved after normalisation annealing.
When a structural steel has undergone normalisation annealing in a furnace or has been normalised by the rolling process, the abbreviation +N is added to the material designation. Steels which have undergone these treatments have a homogeneous fine-grained structure and good formability.
Technical information
The normative and technical documentation for structural and general purpose steel plate shows the chemical composition of steels, the level of mechanical characteristics (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, resilience, etc.) and other quality parameters of products suitable for this use.
