Pressure vessel steels
Reliability starts here
Heavy steel plates for pressure vessels are the main materials used in the manufacture of boilers, vessels and tanks for the transport and storage of liquid and gaseous substances, as well as various technological operations under pressure. They are characterised by good levels of weldability and resilience, withstanding high pressures at different temperatures. They also have high tensile strength, ductility and homogeneity.
Pressure vessel steel is produced and supplied in accordance with the requirements of international and national standards, of which the most widespread are:
- Norma europea EN 10028.
- Normas estadounidenses ASME SA285/SA285M, ASTM A285/A285M, SA515/SA515M, ASME SA516/SA516M, ASTM A516/A516M.
Sectors of application
- Boiler manufacture
- Pressure vessels
- Tanks for the transport of gases and other substances
- Manufacture of pressure equipment accessories
- Manufacture of valves and other components
Conditions of supply
Gross rolling mill
Products made from S235JR, S275JR and S355JR structural steels are generally rolled without changing rolling temperatures and heat treatment conditions. The material designation for a product rolled in this way is given the abbreviation +AR, or the specification is omitted altogether.
Standardisation lamination
The +N supply state can be achieved by annealing in a furnace (+N) or by rolling with subsequent forming in a given temperature range (+NR). This results in a material state equivalent to that achieved after normalisation annealing.
When a structural steel has undergone normalisation annealing in a furnace or has been normalised by the rolling process, the abbreviation +N is added to the material designation. Steels which have undergone these treatments have a homogeneous fine-grained structure and good formability.
Technical information
The normative and technical documentation for structural and general purpose steel plate shows the chemical composition of steels, the level of mechanical characteristics (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, resilience, etc.) and other quality parameters of products suitable for this use.
